I just joined. Thanks for letting me in. My past family experience with Volvos has been with my brother's '57(!) 444, '66 1800S, and an aunt's 164. Loved that car on I-5 between Portland and Salem, Ore back in the '70s.

Anyway, I'm a 5_ year-old car lover with a 14 year-old daughter and I'm thinking about her first car. I want to pick it and I want it to be a Volvo, probably rwd, but "nice." (We used to say cool, but I don't know the right word nowadays.) Nice wheels and stance, clean, and safe. Have already checked out T-bricks, OVT, ipd, VCOA, etc. I can't seem to get a definite answer to when ABS and driver airbags were first installed, so I was happy to find a local group whose collective wisdom I can seek. Also, as potential leads when the time comes to find a car. For now I am in learning mode.

Thanks again!

Hi Mark, welcome to the forum! According to http://www.swedishbricks.net/faq/240.html , driver airbag started in 1990, and ABS standard in '92, but FCP Groton lists an ABS relay as going back to '88. They also list the same part for the same beginning year for the 700s, but this leads me to believe it started sooner. Can't find anything definitive about that one. http://www.swedishbricks.net/ModelFAQ/700model.html says that airbags started in '88. I would imagine anything newer than the early 90s will be much easier to find with all that stuff.

I can tell you, having been in a head-on collision in a 242 with no airbags and walking away completely uninjured, they're not an absolute necessity. Understandable to search for, but if you happen to find a very nice car without one, don't let it be a deal breaker. I'd rather be in an accident in a Volvo with no airbags than a Toyota with 20. Good luck with your search!
