Yup, 2nd chance... That's what I'm giving this '67 122s. The main reason I bought it was to save it from it's former owner... Think gigantic aluminum tranny tunnel just to fit an M41, a suicide opening hood using a house door hinge welded to the front, shortened clutch/brake pedal so you can reach the gas pedal around the massive tunnel, sweet aftermarket 3rd brake light that uses a twig to hold it in the window, a black metal tube as a rear bumper, exhaust with a cherry bomb that exits under the middle of the car (sucking fumes yay!), riveted in headlights, and the list can go on and on...

I've rebuilt the steering system, tore out the beastly trans tunnel (my god that was insane...), tossed in full length pedals, got some parking lights working in the back (don't quite have brake lights yet though), had a real exhaust welded on, and got the tranny most of the way out. The M41 it came with has a shot 4th synchro so it's a paperweight at this point. Anyway, have a 4-spd w/ the longer driveshaft and some other misc stuff in the trunk waiting to go in. Once I get that stuff taken care of I'll start driving it daily and just fix whatever it needs along the way.

Once I get out of this apt and in to a house in June I'll probably tear it down to a shell and really start the project.

Here's a few pics I just snapped off real quick... Trying to get the horn working so don't think all that ugly on the column is normal. Wink Been getting a lot of stuff done lately since the weather is nice again... Almost ready to hit the road.

That looks like an awesome project! The body looks perfect, and the wheels make it look nasty (in a good way). Thanks for sharing Smile

Well the body is hit and miss... The passenger door has quite a bit of filler on it, enough to where it's cracking apart. I'll get it all handled when I strip it down next year though. No big deal...

The interior... Probably gonna grab some BMW e30 seats or something like that. Rear seat is coming out tomorrow (indefinately) in prep for a Ford 9", a rework of the 4-link to accommodate longer / more parallel bars with rod ends, and mini-tubs. Still undecided about how I'm going to work the lateral stability, most likely a watts link...

I saw another one of these oldies sitting in a driveway in San Jose recently. Don't remember where it is now though. I always am looking for Volvo coops

Started getting some of the 4-link stuff together... Ordered all the joints anyway.

These looked like a much better option than the standard heim joints and about the same price as well.

Now I'm on the hunt for a Ford 8.8" w/ LSD out of a newer Explorer...

Sent those Johnny joints back, think they'll be a little big for this car... Ordered up a set of QA1 chromoly heim joints instead. I just hope they'll stand up to the street abuse.

Also got some mock up 15x10 wheels so I can set the rear frame rails in the right spot. 3.5" backspacing on these so the lip is insane. Wink

Lip is the outside of the wheel (the dish), 6.5" of it on these. Will be more like 8" on the steelies I plan to run when it's finished. Size matters! cheers

And again... I sent the heim joints back for some poly bushings instead. They're the same mounting width and thread pitch as the Johnny Joints so if I feel like upgrading later it'll be a simple swap. Everything else I'll be getting from school and the junk yard so updates will be few for now...

Little update... Some new parts and measurements have been taken.

The pro link 4-link axle brackets and the rod ends are ready to go...

Project: 2nd Chance... Moreparts-1

Ford 9" late style big bearing axle housing ends. Much better than crappy c-clip eliminators, true semi-floating Ford 8.8"... Very Happy

Project: 2nd Chance... 0427092126-1

Project: 2nd Chance... 0427092128-1

And here's the measurements / scale drawings of the back-half, 4-link, and coilover setup...

Project: 2nd Chance... 0514091714

Project: 2nd Chance... 0515092056

With ride height (bottom of pinch weld to ground) at 4", the 26" rear tires will be tucking up in to the wheel wells 3.5"... Cool Gonna set 4" as the absolute lowest since the coils will have 2.5" of compression travel at any given ride height and scraping is bad unless it's bagged. Probably run somewhere around 6" out back and 4" up front to give it a little rake. Another 1.5 weeks and the work can begin! The anticipation is killing me but I still have to do a bit of planning and I want everything set perfect before I start.

Thanks.

More parts getting sent back... The 4-link axle brackets needed too much modification so I just traced them out, made the adjustments on paper, and will fabricate new ones myself. Already have to make 4-link frame brackets and tons of different brackets for the coilovers so I might as well do it all custom. Just time consuming... Hopefully I can sucker someone in to making a bunch of them while I fab up the frame rails and narrow the axle.

Grabbed the 8.8" axle from Pick N Pull last weekend. They had a 20% off sale so the final price was $130, was stoked... The 3.73 Traction-Lok one I had my eye on over the past few weeks was raped of it's guts so I ended up having to go with the 4.10 Traction-Lok. No big deal, just 200rpm higher on the highway...

Anyway, hoping to get out in the shop on Thursday to pull the old drivetrain, cut out the floor, and get going on the axle narrowing. I have a feeling the shorter axle shafts are going to take a long time to get made (outsourced) so I'll be hittin that hard off the bat.

Useless without pics, I know... When I get in there tomorrow I'll at least snap a few off of the new axle and the car being lonely in the shop. Not that this thread is blowing up or anything. Wink

A little quicker off the line, too.

Where are you getting the axles done?

You got me droolin' over here! Makes me feel bad about neglecting my 122, and it really makes me wish I had fab skills. Can't wait to see more!

Come to find out the axle I grabbed was recently rebuilt too. New bearings throughout, new clutches in the LSD, etc.

Getting the axle shafts made at Jaws Gear & Axle probably...

I'll try to get pictures up sooner or later, lost the charger for my digital.

Oh yeah, guess I forgot about this... Here's an update.

Axle narrowing from beginning to end:

Project: 2nd Chance... 100_0038

Project: 2nd Chance... 100_0039

Project: 2nd Chance... 100_0053

Project: 2nd Chance... 100_0055

Frame rails going in:

Project: 2nd Chance... 100_0020

Project: 2nd Chance... 100_0021

Project: 2nd Chance... 100_0050

Project: 2nd Chance... 100_0071

Project: 2nd Chance... 100_0068

Project: 2nd Chance... 100_0073

Project: 2nd Chance... 100_0074

And that's pretty much how it sits right now... I welded the old axle to the rails so I could roll it around until I get to making the coilover simulators (tubing with same mounting dimensions basically) and have the new axle shafts for the 8.8" made up. Still have to make the link bars and the frame mounted link brackets before I can actually set the 8.8" in there as well. No real way to work on it anymore though so we'll see where it goes from here sometime in the future. For now it's in storage...
